Small businesses should make every attempt to reduce their energy usage to help cut carbon emissions, environment specialists have warned.

The Carbon Trust claim that restricting emissions is not only 'vital' for the environment but could also help save entrepreneurs money.

Explaining the importance for enterprises to become eco-friendly, Hugh Jones at the trust says: 'Businesses are responsible for 40 per cent of the UK's annual carbon emissions, so it's vital that SMEs take action to reduce their energy use and cut carbon emissions.

'High energy bills mean that there is also a cost imperative for smaller companies looking to improve their bottom line.'

He adds: 'Action does not need to be time-consuming or costly, and the benefits can be almost immediate. In fact, most companies can save up to 20 per cent through no cost and low cost measures.'

The trust estimate that switching one computer off overnight will save a company £18 a year - and enough energy to make 21,000 cups of coffee.
