Post: Registering as a sole trader

Q) What is the procedure for registering as a sole trader?

Answered by Philip Wilkinson, Business Link,

Anyone can set up in business as a sole trader, although for certain types of work you may need a licence or permission from your local authority. Restaurants, childminders, cab drivers and street traders, for example, all need to have a local authority licence. Your qualifications and business premises may be inspected beforehand to ensure you comply with regulations

To set yourself up as a sole trader you need to you need to download and complete form CWF1 to register as self-employed - click here .

SmallBusiness.co.uk has produced a series of guides in PDF format to help you start up. You can get the first of them, 'Starting a Business', by clicking here.

The next one will be available soon and deals with business planning, so keep an eye out.

I have just "clicked here" to get your PDF of "Starting your Business" only to be informed that I have to pay for it. I do not have an issue with this, as I have now paid for it. Only to have it state that it will be mailed to my street address. This is not of any use to me as I wanted to down load it as a PDF now. Please can you either change your comment to reflect this, or tell me how to now down load my purchase?

OK, this problem should be fixed now. The PDF will be emailed to you.

I have been on a health related benefit for nearly two years. I would like to set up my own business. I have all stock but banks say they cannot help as I have no funds behind me. I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

I work part-time and am also looking to start my own business (as a photographer) - I obviously pay tax and NI through my salary - would I need to include details of my paid work in any tax returns as a sole-trader?

If I want to start a business in France as a sole trader, do I have to register and do I need a licence to trade in the street?
