Number of female entrepreneurs on the up

Dec 27 2007

The number of men who run SMEs exceeds women, yet increasing numbers of females are starting up their own businesses, says an industry expert.

A spokesperson for the NatWest everywoman awards says that the gap between the sexes is closing as more and more women recognise the benefits of being your own boss.

Emma Jarman, spokesperson for the event, says: ‘Business is no longer a man’s world.’

‘It is said that a pound invested in a business run by a woman represents a better investment than put into a business run by a man,’ she adds.

According to Jarman, women benefit from working relationships with role models and mentors and it is important for them to surround themselves with those who have experienced similar challenges before.

Research carried out by the Small Business Research Trust (SBRT) has shown a lower growth in female-led SMEs in the third quarter of this year.
