SMEs need to 'exploit' internet potential
Nov 05 2007
UK small businesses need to do more to exploit the possible boost to their business offered by the internet, according to a new report.
Research conducted by the Institute of Directors and UK Online, revealed that nearly two-thirds of small businesses with less than ten employees still do not have an internet connection.
Just over half of those businesses surveyed did not have a company website, with one in five of those who do use the internet not taking basic security precautions such as using anti-virus software.
'Companies and partnerships that do not have any internet provision, or very limited access, could be severely curtailing their opportunities for a wide range of operational and growth activities,' the report states.
It adds: 'Many small business owners are well aware of these issues, but lack the resources, time or ability to progress their use of the internet.'
Recent figures from Forrester Research revealed by 2011 the UK will be the most valuable 'e-commerce' market in Europe, with UK consumers spending nearly £53 billion online.
