Free start-up checklist

Jun 07 2005

For those wanting to set up their own business but who have no idea where to start, support agency Business Link has launched a free checklist to highlight the areas to address first.

The Start-up Checklist is available from the businesslink.gov.uk website, which has just celebrated its first anniversary, having received 8 million visitors since its inception. By answering a series of questions about their proposed business, users will be given a tailored list of guides and tools to help navigate the initial stages of starting up.

Accompanying the launch of the checklist were the results of a survey, showing almost 40% of adults in the UK have started or would like to start their own business. Many see being their own boss as beneficial to their personal lives, but are discouraged by the prospect of financial considerations and increased stress and worry.

Overall, the research suggested would-be entrepreneurs are confident they have the requisite skills and dedication to be successful in business; most believe they are hard-working and good at managing people and money, planning and creativity.

"These research figures are inspiring and it's great that we have such a strong entrepreneurial culture here in the UK,” commented founder of Coffee Republic Sahar Hashemi, who is supporting Business Link in raising awareness of how to go it alone. “Starting up your own business is not as difficult as many people think. Good planning and advice is the key and I would encourage people to make the most of the support and information available and start acting on their business ideas now."
