Owner-managers admit they will be forced to work while on holiday this summer.

Some 60 per cent say they will be in daily contact with staff and 17 per cent admit they will be available 24/7 to deal with any emergencies while they are away, according to a survey from Eclipse Internet.

Clodagh Murphy, director of Eclipse Internet, says: ‘SME owners and managers are fiercely protective of their businesses and with the current economic climate don’t feel comfortable being out of touch with what is going on in the office, even if they are supposed to be on holiday.’

Of the 214 SMEs surveyed, 63 per cent say they won’t take the usual two-week break, opting instead for just one week or a long weekend due to tough economic conditions.
