Smalls firms realising green need

A number of SMEs are realising the need to become more environmentally friendly, a new study has revealed.
According to a study by Lloyds TSB Business and the Open University, 57 per cent of small enterprises are aware of the fact that consumers are more sensitive to green issues but 52 per cent of firms feel they have a lot to do before they can be considered environmentally friendly.
Commenting on the findings, Stephen Pegge, head of communications, Lloyds TSB Business says: 'No business can afford to ignore the environment, but it's clear from this study that many need more information and support to help them take action.'
He added: 'This study seems to show that the potential cost of going green is a real worry for some small firms.
'However, those firms that are taking steps to change are demonstrating that a lot can be done to make an impact - and these changes don't always cost the earth. Indeed, sensible management of energy, waste and travel usually saves costs.'
The study claims that 78 per cent of firms expect the costs of being green to rise in the next three years and a further 55 per cent think the expense will harm profits.
