'Fear of the unknown' harming disabled job prospects

The chance of a disabled person gaining a job is reduced by the 'fear of the unknown' on the part of the applicant and the employer, Remploy believes.

As such, the advice service is calling on disabled people and firms alike to seek information on employing people with physical or mental difficulties.

Candidates often lack confidence and businesses are concerned about political correctness to make major adjustments, a spokesperson for Remploy explains.

She says: 'Dispelling myths has to be the prime factor in opening up employment opportunities to disabled people in the future.'

One of the myths surrounding the employment of disabled people is that they may be more likely to take time off work when in fact they are less likely to do so, the spokesperson adds.

She says that with the proper support and advice, employers often find the experience of taking on disabled workers 'a very positive one'.

Government estimates indicate there are 9.8 million people in the UK with some sort of disability.
