Phishing presents equal risk to small firm

Oct 12 2007

Small firms are under an equal threat of phishing - fraudulently attempting to acquire sensitive information online - as large companies and consumers, experts have claimed.

According to Equifax, a credit rating company, maintains that small and large enterprises are as much at risk of having sensitive information fraudulently taken form them as individuals.

Commenting on phishing and its effect on SMEs, Neil Munroe at Equifax says: 'There's no doubt that corporations, whether they be small businesses or large businesses, are suffering from attempted stealing of identity the same way that individuals are.

'Phishing can apply to … corporations the same way that it can apply to individuals.'

He added: 'Small business may get emails reported to be from their banks or the like requesting information to be supplied.

'There are no real statistics around on it at the moment but there is a fair bit of anecdotal evidence to suggest that it occurs whatever size the business is.'
