The internet can be a 'legal minefield' for small businesses and many may not be aware of how to comply with the law, according to an expert.

New regulations regarding the internet which came into force on October 1st may not have been acted on by some small firms, says the Forum of Private Business.

Phil McCabe, a spokesperson for the organisation, states firms may not be aware of how to keep within these new regulations, like including the company name, number and registered office addresses in all electronic communication.

'For small business owners, the internet can be a legal minefield and many may not be fully aware of what they have to do to comply with the law,' he adds.

McCabe states there may also be other 'less obvious' dangers, such as ensuring everybody, including disabled people, can access the website.

Sections 82 and 85 of the Companies Act 2006 now state each website should also have a copyright statement.
