The government will work with businesses to encourage innovation in the service industries under new plans.

Ways to make it easier for firms to innovate are examined in the Innovation in Services report.

In doing this, it hopes to make the country attractive to innovative firms choosing where to operate, with business minister Shriti Vadera saying the UK is already a world leader in design engineering, architecture and environmental consultancy.

Innovation minister Ian Pearson comments: 'We are helping to create the conditions for innovation to flourish throughout the economy, including the services sector.'

He adds that new ideas are 'critical to the UK's future prosperity, our quality of life and future job prospects'.

According to the report, technologies such as the internet have transformed the ways consumers approach their purchases and the most innovative businesses have adapted to exploit this.

It also finds there is a need for highly-skilled people at all levels to encourage modernisation.

The government claims to have reacted to this by the introduction of its employee education programme Train to Gain.

Research from market researcher Pierre Audoin Consultants, quoted in trade publication ITPro, has found only half of companies measure the level of innovation provided by their IT supplier.
