Government to reform business services

The government is set to reform the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) in an attempt to increase the number of government contracts which are granted to smaller firms, the Cambridge Network reports.

Figures from around Cambridge have been pressuring the government for the reestablishment of the SBRI which will help increase the number of public contracts going to small companies.

According to the Cambridge Network, papers to be read at the autumn Labour Party conference will say that, following recommendations outlined in the Sainsbury Review of the UK Science and Innovation system, the government will adopt the principles of the US scheme.

Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Spokesperson Daniel Zeichner stresses the effect the introduction of the SBRI will have on the city.

He explains: 'Hi-tech innovative businesses in Cambridge stand to benefit from this very significant change to the way Government departments work ... The vital hi-tech sector in Cambridge will be strengthened by this initiative.'

Small business in the region has also recently been given a boost by the establishment of the Big Fish advice and investment service.

Instead of spending more money on another worthless scheme, why does the government not make it easier to tender for small contracts? Any body who has ever tried finds that you have to pay to gain access to the list, and if your company does not fit into their neat littler boxes, you end up with no contracts to apply for! The luckier ones find an impenetrable mass of jargon and acronyms, so they retire defeated also. I bet there's a little clique somewhere, slipping backhanders to the labour party! Mick MOOR
