SMEs stand to 'get a lot out of VoIP'

SMEs are expected to 'get a lot out of VoIP' as it should provide services only previously available to bigger companies, claims a telephony expert.

The Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association (ITSPA) says that ordinary telephony could only provide the SMEs with residential communication products.

Colin Duffy, council member for ITSPA and CEO of Voipfone.co.uk, says that SMEs can access services like telephone extensions, music on hold and call transfer, 'now for almost nothing'.

He adds that although VoIP has been written about recently, the vast majority of SMEs have no concept of what it is or what it does.

'But, as soon as they hear about it, they love it to death. We've seen in our business 12.5 per cent growth per month selling to these small businesses,' Mr Duffy concludes.

According to Ofcom's annual Communications Market report 2007, consumers are increasingly using telephone services over the internet offered by VoIP providers.

By the end of 2006, 20 per cent of respondents to Ofcom's survey said they were phoning online, an increase of 14 per cent from the end of 2005.
