UK businesses have no need to worry about a widesperad failure of internet connections in the UK , according to IT experts.

Commenting after the recent lack of internet access which affected millions of workers in Egypt and India, Intellect say business owners and employees should not worry about an isolated incident on the 'edge of a network'.

Stephen Hearnden, director of telecoms and technology at Intellect, says: ' Occasionally, you get a major outage due to a server fire or occasionally a cable…[however] in the developed countries, there is an enormous amount of redundancy built in.'

Alternative gateways and routing of cables should be in place to ensure there are sufficient back up or redundant cables available, he adds.

According to Intellect, networks have had to keep up with that ever increasing degree of security required. When you are at the centre of a network like businesses in the UK, the risk is reduced.

Damage to an underwater internet cable in the Mediterranean recently left millions of people in Egypt and India unable to connect to the internet.

Up to 70 per cent of the respective nations' networks were affected by the incident.
