SMEs embracing wireless network technology often neglect to put appropriate security measures in place, experts have claimed.

According to the National Computing Centre, a lack of protection could put financial data or even sensitive consumer information at risk.

Commenting on the need to integrate new technology and security, Michael Dean, a spokesman for the centre says: 'Wireless itself can be hacked into so you do need to ensure that you have got the right levels of security.

'People can intercept your communications if you've not got the appropriate levels of security.'

He adds: 'Many organisations had got the security of their wired internet connection in place, so it was very secure; but quite often wireless was overlooked.'

Research by the National Computing Centre revealed that 40 per cent of organisations had only partial security or no security at all for their wireless connections.
