Small firms have been told that designing a company website is best left to the professionals.

According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, the website is a valuable tool that has to be error free and appropriately laid out and, unless the entrepreneur has experience, is best left to the professionals.

Commenting on the need for website specialists, Amy Kean, marketing manager for the Internet Advertising Bureau, says: 'When launching or re-launching your own website, it is advisable to invest in a company dedicated to online creativity and website design as well as having a sound knowledge of website usability and accessibility guidelines.'

'A significant investment at the beginning of this process can serve to avoid later costs if changes are needed due to a poor user experience or bad feedback.'

She concludes: 'However, with the right training, websites can be built sufficiently on a lesser budget and if your site is built with a content management system all changes to text…can be made in-house.'

Research by the small business service Interact reveals that 78 per cent of companies use email to drive traffic to their website.
