Information technology break down is the biggest day-to-day issue for SMEs, new research has revealed.

According to a survey, by IT support company Connect, some 37 per cent of SMEs claim that IT problems are their major source of hassle and almost a third claimed that IT security was their number one problem at work.

Commenting on the figures, Mark MacGregor at Connect says: '[SMEs] just want robust, cost-effective IT systems that actually work.

'One of the challenges we need to address as an industry is how we can deliver more of that type of IT to this vital part of UK business.'

Respondents claimed that IT had become such a stressful issue because staff found it problematic to use and because it was becoming increasingly expensive.

Meanwhile, web advice firm e-consultancy, have urged SMEs to embrace the internet as a useful marketing tool - but only if they have a clear strategy.

Linus Gregoriadis at the company says: 'There are potentially more customers for online businesses. Although things should be thought out - you can't just dive in.'
