Small business owners should only move their enterprise onto the internet if they have a clear strategy, online consultants have claimed.

According to e-consultancy, many businesses move onto the web quickly in order to attract a wider range of customers but the step should not be taken without the appropriate plans in place.

The internet provides an array of options for any SME, such as email marketing and online purchase but in order to be effectively used it must be well managed.

Linus Gregoriadis at e-consultancy says: 'There are potentially more customers for online businesses. Although things should be thought out - you can just dive in - you should have a clear strategy for why you're moving your business online.'

'There are increased market opportunities online to target other customers.'

IT services firm Small Business Computing have urged SME's to use their computers to their full potential by making the most of broadband to transfer data and to build business online.
