Small businesses should invest in internet security as it will save money in the long term, it has been claimed.

The British Computer Society (BCS) argues that online security will help protect from internet threats that cost large amounts of money to rectify.

According to a recent Department of Trade and Industry survey (now the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform), viruses and malicious software accounted for 36 per cent of online SME security problems.

Underlining the need for small businesses to protect themselves, Andrea Simmons at the BCS says: 'We really need to raise…the importance of information as an organisational aspect, however small the organisation.'

She adds: 'It's the whole 'spend to save' mentality required. You do need to put some investment in.'

Further research has shown that 29 per cent of security incidents were caused by systems failure or data corruption and a further 21 per cent were caused by employee misuse of information systems.
