Over £200,000 is up for grabs in the 2004 E-Commerce Awards, with a handy £40,000 going to the overall winner.

Now in their sixth year, the awards are only a few weeks away from their official launch on 17 March. As the name suggests, they look to recognise and reward achievements of small businesses in trading online.

The awards consist of heats in six regions of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with the winners going forward to the national final. Within these heats there are several categories, including e-business start-up, e-business, e-trading, voluntary and community, and broadband.

A further set of awards are available at a national level. Among them are prizes for best use of e-procurement technologies, best use of mobile and wireless technologies, e-tourism and an award, sponsored by the Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, for the best use of e-commerce in rural communities.

For the best of the best, there are national awards for all the regional categories and of course the £40,000 for the business crowned overall winner. Last year, this accolade went to Midlands maintenance contractor Response Maintenance and Building Services for “delivering efficiencies in productivity and stock control as well as improving customer experience, to create a 21st Century business”.

The awards are open to entries from 17 March, but you can pre-register on the website at www.ecommerce-awards.co.uk. Click here for more information on trading online.
