The Forum of Private Businesses (FPB) is asking ministers to take more action in the interests of small business during the drawing up of legislation.

In a letter to the cabinet and the shadow cabinet, the FPB says that more needs to be done for such firms than was detailed in the recent Small Business Act for Europe which is intended to encourage EU legislators to 'think small first'.

Phil Orford, FPB chief executive, believes that regulations are too complicated and cause 'barriers' for small firms, which make up 99 per cent of companies in the UK.

He adds: 'More than ever, given the current economic slowdown, it is ... important that parliamentarians in the UK take the lead and the responsibility for the nation's smallest firms.'

The Small Business Act for Europe has been lauded by the president of the European commission Jose Manuel Durao Barroso as a way to help small businesses to 'thrive'.
