There is evidence that businesses that seek advice and support, particularly during their start up phase and their first few months of life, are far more likely to survive and prosper. Indeed, the advice and guidance of an experienced business adviser can prove crucial. They offer advice, a wealth of business knowledge and experience, as well as access to the latest information, management thinking and government support.
The number of individuals and organisations offering advice is substantial but many people are still unaware of the help available to them, much of it free. The variety of organisations providing business advice can be confusing and for this reason an attempt has been made by the DTI to give people a single first point of contact for business advice in their area. This led to the establishment of Business Links (England), Business Gateways (Scotland), Invest Northern Ireland and Business Eyes (Wales) as 'one-stop-shops' for people starting a business.
This factsheet looks at the reasons for using an adviser, what they can provide, what you should expect, what they will expect of you and how to choose the right business advice service. It also contains useful hints and tips along with links to further information.
