Q: I am VAT registered and wish to change the name of the company. Can I do so and keep the same VAT number?

I assume that when you refer to a company you mean a limited liability company rather than an unincorporated business.

Normally it is possible to transfer the VAT number to a different company. First you must check with Companies House that the new name is acceptable to them. You then need to complete the necessary notification to Companies House to make the change of name. Click here for more information.

Then when you have confirmation that the new name is OK with Companies House you can notify the Revenue and Customs of the change of name.
