Buying goods from overseas suppliers will involve you in a number of transactions and contractual arrangements that you will probably find unfamiliar. There will be particular documents associated with each contract, and there may even be a need for official documents such as an import licence.

This may seem daunting at first, but here are some articles that will help you consider the options.

- How to take out an importing licence
- Some advice on importing food goods into the UK
- Sourcing for a small business - the British Importers Association's directory
- Importing acronyms and terms: FOB, CIF, CFR? What do the following payment terms mean: T/T, L/C?

Also, you should see the factsheet from HMRC called a guide to importing and exporting (from 2008 but still relevant) and from businesslink a factsheet on the tax obligations when importing or exporting.

The British Exporter Association can also provide much useful advice.
