Q: How do I find out if the business premises I intend to move into is in a high-flood-risk area? How seriously should I take the risk of flooding for my business?

With climate change likely to increase the risk of extreme weather events including floods, the Environment Agency is advising all businesses to take steps to prepare for flooding.

According to the organisation, last summer alone nearly 7,000 businesses flooded, with the total damage to businesses estimated at around £1.3 billion – many of these had never flooded before.

Here is some useful business information on flooding, including how to check the risk profile of the area you are in and some simple questions you should be asking yourself to prepare for the worst.

Ask your solicitor to request a flood report from an environmental company who provide detailed information about flood risk areas. The companies providing this information are Groundsure, Landmark and Homecheck to name a few.

A Groundsure report will link into the information held by Norwich Union who record all areas of flood for insurance purposes and will give a risk assessment for the likelihood of flooding.

Each flood risk assessment is individual to each property and not a case of bundling all postcode properties together. I provide these reports on behalf of solicitors so rest assured I know what I am talking about here. If you need any further info I am sure SB could put us in touch with one another.
