The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has suggested that plans to close post offices will have a negative impact upon SMEs in the UK.

A survey conducted by the organisation found that 97 per cent of small businesses believe that the post office is an important part of a local community.

John Wright, national chairman of the FSB, claims that successive governments have 'reduced the viability of local post offices'.

'Each post office generates footfall for other local shops and businesses,' he states.

'We already face the loss of up to 50,000 small shops by 2015. The prospect of additional post office closures is yet another nail in the coffin for our local high streets.'

In Norfolk, the Post Office recently announced that it plans to close 51 out of 316 branches, according to the Norwich Evening News.

The move has sparked a campaign to stave off closure led by the newspaper.
