'Focus' and a 'realistic' approach are essential for a successful home business, according to BT Business.

The achievements of a small home-based business depends on 'how clear you are about what you want to achieve,' says Mick Hegarty from the firm.

He adds that a successful entrepreneur will be prepared for the realities of working from home and will be able to prioritise well.

Factors such as location or having children are less important than an entrepreneur's attitude, he claims.

Enterprise Nation says Britain's 2.1 million home businesses employ 28 per cent of the UK workforce and make up 60 per cent of new enterprises, with a combined turnover of £364 billion.

Business and professional sectors, trading online, food and personal services are among the fastest-growing areas.
