The cheapest green measures an SME can make can often be the most effective, claims an environmental expert.

Dr Chris Moon, head of sustainability services at Green Your Office, says thousands of pounds per employee can be saved through making simple changes at work.

'Switching to more environmentally-friendly paper can save you money - and this outcome can be just a click away,' he says.

He adds: 'There are now good estimates for the likely savings in operational costs from implementing effective energy and waste management policies.'

Dr Moon recommends businesses use greener products such as ethical cleaning products and buy green to ensure the workplace becomes more environmentally-friendly.

Recent research reveals that despite SMEs recognising the importance of making environmental practices a priority a third have yet to take any action.

Figures from Envirowise show that 79 per cent of SMEs think green issues are important while 48 per cent believe they are more environmentally active than a year ago.
