Recycling is now a way of life for many of us – in the home at least. It seems that the green message is finally filtering through as we become more aware of behaviours and actions that can have a negative impact on the environment.

However, when it comes to the workplace, more could be done to encourage sustainable working practices. SmallBusiness.co.uk and officebroker.com offers the following advice to businesses looking to create more sustainable working practices:

Go green from the start

When looking for new office space, consider those that have been designed with sustainability in mind. Ask any potential office space provider which environmental policies they have in place. For instance, is there a recycling facility available?

Turn things off

This is a tip that is often repeated and generally ignored. Making sure that all lights, computer equipment and machinery are turned off at the end of the day will save energy and money.

Green water

If there is a water cooler, is it filtered from the mains or does it use water bottles? These can be less environmentally friendly even if they are re-used, as they have to be delivered.

Appoint a ‘green’ employee

Having made the decision to ‘go green’ choose someone to be responsible for the project and perhaps hold a quarterly meeting in which you can monitor the effectiveness and cost of any projects.

You could have one responsible person in each department who could research sustainable practices across each area of your business from purchasing to transport, technology and telecommunications.

Blow hot and cold

Turning your heating down by one degree could save up to ten per cent on heating bills and turning off air conditioning when it’s not needed can save money and energy too. Liaise with health and safety staff to tackle over-heating caused by poorly maintained equipment or ventilation and make sure radiators and heaters aren't obstructed.

Let people know

Work closely with suppliers, customers and other stakeholders to ensure they are all fully aware of your strategy and can support your efforts.

Make the most of your green credentials and communicate your policies to your customers and a wider audience to gain credibility and give you a competitive edge.
