Q: I have worked for a company for four years. It's the only company that I have been with since I came to England. They refuse to give me a reference because they have a dispute with my future employer. Is that legal?

Although strictly this matter goes beyond employment law I can tell you that reference giving is a hot topic for employers. I would advise them to provide you with a fair reference because if their failure to do so prevents you from getting another job, then you may have a claim against them.

I would advise that you see a solicitor with experience of managing ‘disputes’ if you think this may be the case.
