Effective management of staff means people are less likely to go off sick unnecessarily, leading to cost savings for companies.

Ben Willmott, senior public policy advisor at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, says if managers offer good feedback, issue clear objectives and consult with workers, the employees will feel more motivated.

He states if staff are committed to the company they are less likely to take time off sick.

Managers should also effectively structure any absence on their teams consistently throughout the year.

Willmott advises that bosses should know when employees are taking time off, why and ensure they are having back-to-work interviews.

'Managers can also look at any underlying causes behind absence which might not be related to ill health,' he adds.

The expert states that a realistic approach should be taken by managers, who should note that there are certain times of the year when sickness rates are higher.

Employers can help to boost their staff wellness levels by getting people to take a break each day, encouraging them to get fresh air and by providing fresh fruit in the workplace, according to First Care, which offers absence management services.
