Paying attention to the local community can bring benefits to businesses, according to one commentator.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Leo Martin, director and co-founder of Good Corporation, notes that schemes which couple the need of a company with the wants of its community are normally 'sustainable in worsening economic climates' as they benefit everybody involved.

David Logan, co-chair of Corporate Citizenship, adds that in particular skills training for the community can benefit people living in it and help employers overcome skills shortages.

The news provider cites repairs service Axis and social housing business Gentoo as companies which have successfully trained workers within the community.

Logan adds there are many ways companies can work with their communities, suggesting firms join charities, or provide services for their surrounding districts.

Meanwhile, the Learning Skills Council recently claimed that apprenticeships are one of the best ways businesses can recruit staff as they get employees who are eager to make a career for themselves.
