Having effective management structures in place is 'everything' for small businesses, according to a management expert.

Sean Taggart, businessman and member of the government's ministerial advisory panel for leadership and management, says that the quality of management in a business affects its productivity.

He comments: 'If you want to survive in an uncertain environment, and particularly if you want to succeed and grow, you have to be lean and you have to be productive.'

Taggart added that bad or ineffective management can mean that an SME is missing opportunities and creating inefficiencies, as well as possibly frustrating those who they are working with.

People 'at the top of those organisations' need to take the initiative and invest in training and development for themselves and their colleagues, Taggart concluded.

According to the National Employer Skills Survey 2007, some 163,000 managers in England experience a skills gap, three quarters of whom lack management skills.
