Managers 'aware of bullying' problems

Managers are aware of the problems caused by bullying and stress in the workplace, according to business experts.

The Chartered Management Institute (CIM) says that the pressures of having to meet deadlines can be responsible for increased worker stress, while lack of managerial skill has been seen as a cause behind bullying.

Mike Petrook, a spokesperson for the CIM, says according to research, only one per cent of managers would not help employees deal with work-related stress.

He says: '75 per cent say that they would talk to all the parties involved and one in ten on top of that said they would raise the issue with a senior manager.'

According to research by the Samaritans, up to 80 per cent of workers have been bullied during their careers.

Young employees are the most vulnerable to stress, with 38 per cent feeling less likely than all other age groups to talk openly to their managers about work issues they may have.
