Recruitment agencies can be a 'good resource' for SMEs, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
The body says that SMEs can benefit from the assistance of agencies in employing staff as, compared with larger organisations, they are less likely to have a dedicated resource to deal with staffing issues.
Victoria Winkler, an advisor for the CIPD, says: 'In small businesses it's likely there will be somebody doing it on top of their ordinary day job.'
While the recruitment process is not less stressful for SMEs, these companies may have less positions to fill and 'can perhaps be a bit more hands on as a result'.
Winkler says that SMEs may choose a number of different routes in order to take on new employees.
Informal networks and the job centre can both help businesses to expand their workforces.
According to consumer group Which?, interviewees are still confused about what a potential employer can and cannot ask them during the recruitment process.
