Employers could be risking the reputation of their organisations through their poor handling of redundancies, warns a recruitment site.

Nearly one in three jobseekers say their ex-employers handled their redundancy poorly, says online careers advice service Careerplan4.me.

Additionally jobseekers often tell other people about their redundancy experiences, with almost a third (31 per cent) having told more than ten people about their treatment by an ex-employer.

Richard Banks, co-founder of Careerplan4.me, says: ‘In the past, redundancies could be handled away from any media glare. However, with the advent of social media comes the increased risk of employees generating many one-to-one, as well as online conversations, which can rapidly and virally escalate.’

Of the 1,000 jobseekers surveyed, half believe their overall treatment by their last employer was unfair or poor, while only 14 per cent say they were well-treated.
