One in four Britons over the age of 35 would like to start their own business, new research has shown.

The survey, compiled by Bradford and Bingley, has shown that 30 per cent would like to change their profession and a further 25 per cent would like to own a small business.

However, the over-35s are not the only group who harbour desires to work more independently. According to research by Inventya, 13 million UK residents have had business ideas but only three million have followed them through.

Urging more people to act on the entrepreneurial urges, David Thomas at Inventya says: 'Britain is traditionally a fairly reserved nation and people do not tend to go for it where fresh ideas are concerned.

'But this is what needs to happen if we are to compete with nations such as the US and Japan.'

He adds: 'There are plenty of free resources on the internet, put together by people that have been there and done it, all you need is a web connection. After all, you never know what might happen.'
