Female entrepreneurs to be 'empowered'

Sep 18 2008

Budding female entrepreneurs are set to be 'empowered ... to make their dreams a reality' at special events this autumn.

The Women's Enterprise Day will take place on November 19th and celebrations of female entrepreneurship will be taking place around the country.

Business support groups around the country will be getting involved in the non-profit organisation Enterprise Insight's initiative, offering workshops and seminars including advice on running a small company.

Alex Ritchie, women's enterprise campaigner for the body's Make your Mark campaign, says the organisation hopes to highlight the 'inspirational achievements of the UK's many successful entrepreneurs'.

'From ideas yet to be launched to kitchen table businesses, we'd like them all to consider their growth potential and, who knows, some may even end up as global empires,' she adds.

Enterprise Insight reports more than one million British women are now self-employed and female-owned businesses contribute a total of more than £60 billion to the economy.

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform's Annual Small Business Survey 2006-07, published earlier this year, found 14 per cent of small businesses with employees were led by women.
