Scotland unveils £3.3m broadband boost

Feb 06 2009

Scottish companies are to benefit from a £3.3 million investment in broadband infrastructure.

The country's government reveals that the initiative will deliver the technology to around 4,000 firms and households that were previously unconnected.

John Swinney, Scottish finance secretary, says he is 'delighted' the investment will give so many businesses access to broadband.

He adds: 'Broadband has fast become an essential tool for companies the length and breadth of Scotland. By upgrading our broadband infrastructure, we are helping companies … gain a competitive advantage.'

Norman Campbell, a small business owner who runs the Ardgualich Farm campsite, comments that broadband will allow the firm to change how it operates, as it can strengthen its customer contact and sales activities.

Swinney also suggests the development is part of the country's recovery plan to better place it for the eventual economic upswing.

Last year, Northern Ireland launched a £1.9 million fund offering support to companies which are trialling the use of high-speed broadband connections.
