SMBs 'lack knowledge of VoIP'

Many small businesses do not implement voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services as they fear they may not understand it, says a source.

Some firms do not know how the technology works and so are resistant to implementing it, according to Technology Means Business (TMB), which is an industry-standard accreditation for business and information and communications providers.

Dr Adam Le Gresley, head of operations at TMB, says many firms are put off due to the complexity of the systems which need setting up.

He adds: 'People have to realise there is very good customer support from voice-over-internet providers.'

Le Gresley states it is not a valid argument for a firm to say it is scared of the technology and the lack of implementation is not about the cost effectiveness of VoIP.

According to ComputerWeekly.com, calls made with VoIP are free or cheaper than conventional telephone lines and eventually the distinction between internet and a traditional phone system will be blurred.
