Unmonitored laptops 'could cause fraud'

Sep 23 2008

The increasing use of transportable devices like laptops, memory sticks and mobile phones presents a risk to businesses and their customers.

According to the Ponemon Institute, the mobile nature of these devices means protecting private and confidential information is a difficult job for companies.

Mike Spinney, communications director for the firm, says: 'Data mobility presents a serious and complex challenge to organisations.'

He adds the approach to data management is not 'a one-size-fits-all' solution, but needs a strategic plan.

Spinney states it needs 'a thorough understanding of the organisation's current systems, level of training, types of data collected and used, industry, and more'.

Research conducted by StrongMail, entitled the 2008 UK Study on Email Marketing Practices and Privacy, finds almost two-thirds of firms have experienced a loss or theft resulting in a data breach.

It also discovered in the majority of cases the incident is not reported to the affected customer as the firm does not feel it is obliged to.
