Businesses 'need to protect their intellectual property'

Apr 14 2008

The government is advising small business owners to ensure that their intellectual property rights are protected.

According to the UK Intellectual Property Office, small firms rely heavily on their intellectual capital - both with innovative new products and the reputation of the company.

It says that many people are not aware of the need not only to protect their company name but also to protect their work trademarks and designs.

The warnings come ahead of the Intellectual Property Awareness Day in Newcastle which will take place tomorrow.

Local entrepreneurs and representatives from a number of trade bodies including the North East Chamber of Commerce will come together at an event which will educate small business owners on what kind of capital they need to protect.

Intellectual capital that may need to be protected includes trademarks, products - especially unique inventions, and designs.
