Domain name rules have 'vanished'
Nov 19 2007
Many of the rules relating to securing domain names have 'vanished', a leading industry figure has claimed.
Regulations are in place but no one enforces them according to Mascen Galvin, development director for communications company, Pipex Hosting.
Galvin says that while some registration companies for domain names have taken a discerning approach to the allocation of internet extensions, others have been more 'laissez faire'.
'There probably are some people that are confused by it and perhaps there is an argument for saying that the registration companies need to do more to enforce their rules, ' he says.
However he added that unless somebody is deliberately going out of their way to cause confusion, the identity of a website should be fairly clear from its internet extension.
The market for domain names remains healthy, according to the Financial Times. Porn.com was the most expensive domain name ever, selling for $9.5 million earlier this year although Sex.com reportedly fetched $12 million last year.
Pipex Hosting is an offshoot of Pipex Business, a communications supplier which has over 35,000 business customers.
