Data recovery eased by continuity plans

Small enterprises can avoid potentially disastrous data loss by formulating a logical business continuity plan, experts have claimed.

Hitachi Data Systems, a storage solutions company, maintain that data, backed up daily and weekly, is one of the most fundamental ways to prevent catastrophic loss.

Stressing the need for small enterprises to have recovery plans, UK managing director of Hitachi Data Systems, Steve Murphy says: 'Putting in place a tested business continuity plan is extremely important for all businesses, particularly SMEs, as they rarely have the reserves necessary to pick the business up after a disaster.'

He adds: 'Key elements of this plan as far as data is concerned should include taking daily and weekly backups of data, perhaps considering outsourced data management and keeping backups, disks, original software license agreements, important documents and copies of these in a secure offsite location.'

According to research by the London Chamber of Commerce, some 43 per cent of companies that suffer a disaster, such as data loss, never recover.
