Small businesses must back up data

Sep 18 2007

Small businesses have to ensure that all data is successfully backed up to make certain that they do not face technology meltdown, experts have claimed.

According to Personal Computer World, all businesses that share information should ensure they have measures in place sooner rather than later.

Advising firms to take up a centralised approach, using a server to hold the key documents, Alan Stevens wrote on the company website: 'That really does make life a lot easier, as most of our backup efforts can be concentrated on that one resource, rather than having to worry too much about protecting individual desktops and notebooks.'

However, warning that the approach can have drawbacks, he concludes: 'Of course, the server is then a single point of failure and if it were to go wrong the whole company could, potentially, grind to a halt.

'So we have not only to consider backup but how to recover from a complete failure of the server, commonly referred to as disaster recovery.'
