Businesses still not comfortable with social media

27 per cent of companies with a website admit they have never used online methods to interact directly with customers
Small businesses are neglecting to interact with their customers through social media, research finds.
According to a study of 467 small companies by web hosting provider Fasthosts Internet, 27 per cent of companies with a website admit they have never used online methods to interact directly with customers.
Only 23 per cent participate in social networking on websites such as Twitter and Facebook. This is despite 38 per cent of consumers expecting such activity from businesses, according to a separate survey of 1,000 respondents.
Despite the findings, 34 per cent of companies are worried about their online visibility, both in terms of attracting customers and suppliers or partners.
Steve Holford, marketing director for Fasthosts Internet, says, ‘It appears that online communication is still a problem for many UK businesses. Every small business can gain from demonstrating a commitment to their audience through interacting online, and presenting their activities proactively on popular social media channels.’

Monday 17th January 2011I think social media is incredibly powerfully, so long as people feel confident about using them. There are courses out there, though I'd suggest, just a day in with someone who uses Facebook/Twitter etc often is enough to get to grips with the basics!
