Govt unveils cyber security initiative
Jun 26 2009
The government has launched its Cyber Security Strategy to allow businesses to operate safely in the digital revolution.
Under the initiative, which is the first of its kind in the UK, a dedicated Office of Cyber Security will work with the new multi-agency Cyber Security Operations Centre in Cheltenham to help protect the county's IT systems.
The scheme will deploy measures to make these networks resilient, as well as working to plug the IT security gaps in the business world and advise firms on the best ways they can protect themselves against cybercrime.
According to the Cabinet Office, more than £50 billion is spent online in the UK each year and 90 per cent of purchases on the high street involve an electronic transaction, leading to the increasing need to boost security.
Prime minister Gordon Brown comments: 'In the 21st century, we have to secure our position in cyberspace in order to give people and businesses the confidence they need to operate safely there.'
Gareth Elliott, senior policy adviser at the British Chambers of Commerce, claims that the business community will be pleased by the strategy, as it shows the government is starting to take cybercrime seriously.
