Small software firms receive support in north-east

A £2.1 million investment in Wearside will support more than 70 small firms in the north-east's software sector.
Regional development agency One North East has provided funding to the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) in Sunderland, which aims to boost the creation and growth of high-tech small businesses.
The investment will be used to deliver support to entrepreneurs, as well as provision of mentoring, finance, facilities and services.
New and growing firms will also benefit from dedicated premises and networking support to put enterprises in touch with graduates and investors.
Paul McEldon, BIC chief executive, comments: 'We recognise that the software sector is a competitive market and we need effective marketing and business support for enterprise to reflect this.'
He adds that the initiative intends to boost interest in innovation and technology, in addition to raising the aspirations of people from disadvantaged areas.
Earlier this year, One North East announced that almost £2 million was being invested in Codeworks Connect and Codeworks GameHorizon, two initiatives which support the region's digital and computer game sectors.
