Q: What is the best way to back up my company data?

Feb 27 2007

Answered by: Chris Lindsay     Ask a question

Despite the importance of electronic data, our research shows only 11 per cent of smaller companies see data backup as a priority. What normally happens is that it becomes a priority after something has gone wrong.

There are lots of ways to back up your data. Traditionally, using tape and CD were the most popular, but these often remain on site and rely on staff to initiate the process. This can result in less regular backups than necessary. The latest backup services, such as BT PC Backup, run over broadband and allow users to automate their processes and easily store the latest copies of their data remotely.

Using these services means that backup is never forgotten and that data is protected and can be retrieved from any location should a problem occur.

Indeed, Mark, and further, I think that most backup strategies are based on ease of backup, rather than ease of restore. This is clearly letting the cart lead the horse. After all, it's the ability to restore your data as quickly and efficiently as possible that must drive your backup routine and get your business productive again with minimal disruption. We would advise not to rely heavily on one back up approach, but to use a combination of onsite and offsite back up procedures. This is because it is common for SME's not to verify their back ups and also, if you reply on something such as BT's PC Backup then there will be a time between restoring your network connectivity and server/desktop environment and the speed of your internet connection to retrieve your data.

Use internet based back ups as a fail back, but retain methods such as tape/imaging to local devices that are taken offsite. This will allow you to get back up and running quickly. James Newport - www.pureitsolutions.co.uk
