Q: I have an external hard drive that we use to back up all our files. Now it seems not to be working and I can’t access the important information I need. Is there anything I can do? Is everything lost forever?

In theory, it is highly likely that you can recover information from a hard drive. If you cannot access the files yourself, you will need to see a specialist who can do this, and the cost of the service will vary depending on the severity of the damage. It is also worth noting, that your files may be automatically ‘renamed’ in the process.
Going forward, it is important that you back up all your data in a way that can be recovered and doesn’t rely on your hard drive. In fact, recent BT and IoD research showed that less than 20 per cent of UK small businesses back up their computer data remotely, even though 82 per cent admit that they could not function without it.
Whilst it’s important to back up your data, you don’t need to go over the top or spend money unnecessarily. Look at what’s important to your business and take the necessary precautions to protect your core assets. There are many options available, but the latest services allow you to use your broadband connection to backup files. For example, BT Business PC Backup, an automated service that remotely backs up PC data whenever and wherever customers connect to the internet (both fixed-line and wireless broadband).
